What’s the key to successful corporate reporting in the new era, Mette Byström?

The impact of CSRD on many companies’ annual and sustainability reporting in the coming years is something that few have missed. Mette Byström, Senior Consultant and Partner, reflects on her experiences and offers a few tips along the way. She also reveals what she never does in her free time.

Does the size of the company make any difference in how you approach reporting projects?
– Larger companies naturally have more stakeholders and more people scrutinizing them. However, the group of people responsible for a company’s reporting is often not that large. In many cases, it’s just a handful of people, although the group has certainly grown in recent years as sustainability has become more central in reporting. I think it’s an advantage to have experience with the processes and challenges of large companies, as it provides valuable insights that are applicable also to smaller companies. It’s a common question we get: “How do others work?”

What’s the most important factor for a successful annual and sustainability report?
– Know the client. It may sound obvious, but it’s always important to dig deep into a company’s situation and direction. A good report is created with an understanding of the logic of the capital market and is based on the company’s equity story, which is an important building block in the company’s narrative and future strategy. The workshops we conduct early in a project are great tools to build this understanding, and we have an effective method for this.

How has CSRD changed the process of preparing annual reports?
– CSRD is adding a level of complexity and decisions to the process. It has also meant that many consultants have more things to advise on, and we often hear that clients have a hard time understanding who can help them with what, and that they feel they are not getting support all the way through. At Année, we don’t leave until the job is done. We are involved as both advisors and executors, from setting a report strategy and structure, then creating texts and design that align with the strategy, and staying involved until the report is published.

When you’re not working, what do you do in your free time?
– I love knitting. The process is both relaxing and creative; sometimes it requires mostly brainwork, and at other times it’s just my hands working. As a bonus, I get a very personal, slow fashion wardrobe!

And what do you avoid?
– I’m not a typical camper. I love being in nature but not necessarily sleeping in it. I’ll leave that to others.
